The Phantom of the Opera has won more than 70 major theater awards. In 2000, The Pantages underwent an inch-by-inch renovation in preparation for The Lion King musical. Since its opening in 1930, it has hosted world premieres of blockbuster films, a decade of the Academy Awards, and has served as a shooting location for a long list of movies, television shows, and music videos. The Pantages Theatre is one of the top venues in Los Angeles for seeing the best of Broadway musicals. A national tour began in early 1991 and after 20 years of touring ended at the Pantages Theatre in October 2010 where its final performance was attended by Phantom inaugurals Sarah Brightman and Andrew Lloyd Webber. The show first made an appearance there in 1989 at the Ahmanson Theatre in Downtown L.A., opening with the original London lead Phantom, Michael Crawford. ![]() Los Angeles has been host to Phantom of the Opera throughout the years. This man, the Phantom, hides his disfigured face with what has become the image of the musical, the porcelain white half-mask. Phantom of the Opera is based on the 1910 French novel by Gaston Leroux and tells the story of Christine, a beautiful and talented opera singer who becomes the object of desire of a mysterious man who lives beneath the Paris Opera House. The show is known for delighting theatergoers with its spectacular stage elements (including the signature haunted chandelier), stellar acting performances, and memorable soundtrack. One of the longest-running shows of all time, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera is an iconic production that has stood the test of time.
